Dentures are a popular option for rebuilding after tooth loss because they’re a versatile and cost-effective treatment. Wearing your restoration can help you eat and speak more easily, and because it’s customizable, you can look and feel your most confident self.
But did you know that tooth loss weakens your jawbone? This can eventually lead to ill-fitting dentures, which may require relining to continue enjoying their many benefits. You might wonder whether it’s safe or acceptable to repair them yourself, but this isn’t usually recommended. Continue reading to learn more about it!
Why Do My Dentures Require Relining?
Under normal circumstances, the roots of your teeth stimulate your jaw with each bite down. This triggers bone growth, helping it remain strong enough to continue supporting your teeth. When a tooth falls out, your body starts to reabsorb some of its mass. Not only does this process of degeneration weaken your jawbone and alter your facial structure, but it also flattens the bony ridges in your mouth.
Your dentures rely on these structures to form a tight enough suction with your gums to remain firmly in place throughout the day, and they can become ill-fitting with these changes. If they feel loose, make a clicking sound when you open or close your mouth, or frequently become dislodged, they may require relining.
What Is Denture Relining?
Denture relining refers to the process in which your dentist adds additional materials to the gum-colored base to ensure a proper fit. Based on your unique circumstances, they might recommend one of the following options:
- Soft reline. This method involves adding a more pliable, cushioned material, such as silicone, to improve the fit. This is the least durable of the two types and may require adjustments every 12 to 18 months.
- Hard reline. This is intended to provide a longer-term, sturdier fit and relies on more rigid materials. It lasts for 2 to 4 years, but it may not be recommended if you already have sensitive gums, as it can sometimes cause tenderness.
Can I Reline My Own Dentures?
It’s sometimes possible to purchase denture relining kits that contain various supplies intended to help people repair their dentures. You might think you can save time and money by performing your restoration at home, but you don’t have your dentist’s experience or access to state-of-the-art technology.
Even if you have the right materials in your kit, you might not know exactly where or how to apply them to achieve the intended outcome. Unfortunately, application errors can lead to additional concerns, such as bite misalignment, which might have been avoided if you had contacted your provider first.
If you’re concerned about the fit of your dentures, your dentist can help reline or replace them so you can continue enjoying the many benefits of your one-of-a-kind restoration!
